On Sunday, July 4, police recovered the body of James Drago, the Mount Vernon firefighter missing in the Long Island Sound since Saturday, June 26. According to Larchmont Police Sgt. William Walsh , the body was found by a marine unit from the Mamaroneck Village police at around 9:30 am in the water near the Larchmont Shore Club, in the general vicinity where had had last been seen alive.
According to the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s office, Mr. Drago was identified Sunday morning by New Rochelle police. An autopsy will be conducted on Monday.
Mr. Drago, 49, and a woman in her late 20s (who police have declined to name) had been swimming on June 26 off a boat anchored in the water near a reef known as Hen and Chickens. At around 1 pm, she called 911 to report him missing. From around 1:30 to 10 pm, there was an extensive search deploying police and civilian units from a number of neighboring communities, Westchester County and New York City.
Larchmont police continued the search on subsequent days, but no sightings were reported until today.
