“Be a Star” Comes to Hispanic Resource Center Fiesta: Nov 13

The Hispanic Resource Center’s annual benefit Fiesta always promises great food and entertainment.  This year, there will be some novel elements and different ways to donate.  In addition to welcoming its new executive director, Zoe Colon, the HRC is launching “Be A Star,” that gives benefit attendees a chance to purchase items from the staff’s wish list.

Joyce Callahan and Sheryl McSherry are coordinating the “Be A Star” effort.  According to Ms. Callahan, “We wanted to give people the opportunity to donate specific items for the HRC and its clients. Items on the wish list include: $25 food store gift cards, sets of  SAT and ACT prep books for $25; a tent for the Worker Center for $200; and new laptops for the Learning Families program at $500 each.”

Ms. McSherry explained, “When people purchase an item on the wish list, their name will be written on a star and placed on a mural created by local artist Sue Girardi.” The mural will be on display at the Fiesta and will eventually be housed at the HRC. “Donors will also be entered into a raffle to win a personalized photo collage of their child or family by renowned New York City photographer Gregoire Ganter,” sasid Ms. McSherry.

“We hope the Fiesta will give people lots of different ways to donate to the HRC and have fun at the same time,” said Liz Liscio, co-chair of the Fiesta. “We have raffle prizes, silent and live auction items that feature jewelry, vacations, a signed Alex Rodriguez bat, tickets to Broadway, Giants tickets, a beautiful photograph by Palmer Davis as well as jewelry, pampering, fitness and personal training and clothing from a number of local vendors.  Guests can also sign up for cooking classes to learn Colombian and Peruvian specialties or attend a party to sample empanadas and learn about Argentinean wines from David Calkins of Wine Gems at Perriellos.”
