Is it my imaginiation or did a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD surge over the past 5 - 10 years? Is it just possible that may in fact be a direct correlation between sedentary and inactive lifestyles of today's kids and this particular condition? Especially the ADHD part?

Just asking a logical rational question. Hope no one takes offense. I know it's a sensitive subject but my question is a legitimate one. When I read how students in the community are not walking to school anymore and making it a big deal when they do (virtual school bus, once a month group walking programs), this frightens the Dickens out of me.

Our children and grandchildren walked to school every day in the Mamaroneck School district come rain or shine, snow or sleet. Just like the postal service, they rarely if ever complained about it. Back then they didn't have all the crossing guards at every corner including the one at Weaver Street and Boston Post Road. This was a gross oversight and sadly, there was a fatal accident with a young Hommocks student years back because of this.

However, today it appears there are crossing guards at most major intersections during the school days. So please tell me again why students can't walk to school? Would this not be a great form of exercise, and social engagement for them? I wonder if the possible link and connection to the ADD/ADHD increased occurances may be a less active and more sedentary lifestyle. For some students, the only exercise they get is gym class and walking to and from school with book bags. This is what our children did in the old days and it kept them out of trouble and physically healthier. Think about the dollars that would be saved on cutting back the number of school buses. Years ago, these buses were all but empty.
