The Village of Mamaroneck Republican Committee has announced their slate of candidates for the November election. The November election will have 3 trustee seats up and a Village Justice position. Candidates for trustee include incumbent, Marianne V. Ybarra, who will run for re-election, and newcomers Mary Polanco Vozza and Gregory Sullivan, both attorneys. Christie McEvoy-Derrico will run for Village Justice.
Many people in the community know Trustee Ybarra, a warm-hearted, well loved woman who first ran for election in 2009 to fill an unexpired term on the Board of Trustees. Ms. Ybarra is a lifelong village resident and 20 year veteran civil servant; she brings to the position a wealth of experience which ranges from her personal experience as a flooding victim, to community volunteer. She pledges to pursue her personal conviction “to limit real estate tax inflation.” She lives with her husband, Peter, and their daughter.
Gregory Sullivan is admitted to the bar in New York and Connecticut. He began his thriving law practice in Mamaroneck several years ago, which he has continued to grow and expand. Greg has served on the Village of Mamaroneck Zoning Board of Appeals and he is a member of numerous organizations such as the Mamaroneck Chamber of Commerce, the Mamaroneck Harrison Larchmont Bar Association, the Mamaroneck Elks Club, Mamaroneck Lions Club. To children he is known as “Coach” through his involvement with the Mamaroneck Junior Soccer League, Larchmont Mamaroneck Little League, St. Vito’s CYO Basketball and Mamaroneck Youth Hockey. Greg and his wife, Theresa, fill their busy days raising their four children and keeping them active here in the village.
Mary Polanco Vozza is an attorney as well as a New York State certified teacher. She lives in Harbor Heights with her husband, Joe, and their two sons. Mary’s teaching experience as well as her legal experience makes her uniquely qualified to serve in the public sector. Mary is involved in many local civic organizations including Mamaroneck Shares, and Mamaroneck Chamber of Commerce. She is a member of the Mamaroneck Avenue School PTA, as well as a member of The Junior League of Westchester on the Sound. Mary’s Spanish heritage and fluency in the language would bring diversity and effective communication to our Hispanic residents, helping our Village government understand their needs within the community.
Mary’s objectives are “to make our Village government serviceable to the interests of the residents, while promoting strategies to improve community services and reducing our expenditures.”
Christie McEvoy-Derrico served as Village Trustee from 2002-2004. In 2004 she ran again and lost the election by approximately five votes. During her downtime from political service she served as the president of the Larchmont – Mamaroneck League of Women Voters for three years. During that time the League addressed critical issues important in our community such as participating in an immigration study, conducting annual political debates and conducting environmental forums. Ms. McEvoy-Derrico is admitted to the bar in New York and New Jersey, and the Federal Court Southern and Eastern Districts. She presently serves as the Village Attorney here in Mamaroneck while maintaining her local legal practice. Ms. Derrico graduated cum laude from Boston University and received her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School.
She lives in the Harbor Heights section of Mamaroneck with her husband, Don and their four children. Other activities have included coaching travel soccer and engaging in numerous community events such as the PTA and providing pro-bono legal support to the Hispanic Resource Center.
