KATHARINE STEWART ZAVELL
Katharine Stewart Zavell, beloved wife of the late Martin F. Zavell, died at her
home in Larchmont on Friday, December 9, of pancreatic cancer. She was 73.
Born in Evanston, IL, Mrs. Zavell traveled east to attend Mount Holyoke College.
Upon graduating, she moved to New York City where she worked for Macys and,
later, for J. Walter Thompson.
Married to Marty in 1956, they moved to Larchmont to raise their family. A devoted
mother of three, mother-in-law and grandmother of five, Mrs. Zavell was a gentle
force in her community. She was active for many years with the Junior League and
Soundettes, the Twig and DAR and through her work she made lasting contributions
that touched many.
Mrs. Zavell was also a member of the Altar Guild at St. John's Episcopal Church
and an involved member of the congregation. Mrs. Zavell's interests were many
and varied. She was enthusiastic about travel, history and art. She built upon
these interests through her volunteer work and her extensive travel with family
and friends. She will be sorely missed.
Mrs. Zavell is survived by her devoted daughters Jeanne and Andrea, her son
Michael and his wife Christina, her grandchildren Conor, Emily, Riley, Nevin and
Camron and her dear brother John Stewart and sister Michael Sommer.
Visiting hours will be held at Fox Funeral Home in Larchmont on Thursday,
December 15, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Services will be
