BARBARA JANE HORNIG
Barbara Jane Hornig a lifetime resident of Larchmont, NY passed away on October
17, 2005. She was born to John and Jane Cunniffe in New York City in June 1950.
She attended the Ursuline School and graduated from the Country Day School of the Scared Heart in
Newton, MA. She received a Bachelors of Arts in English from the College of New Rochelle and a
Master’s degree in Education from Lehman College.
Barbara was married to David R. Hornig for 34 years. The two met for the first time at a high school
dance in Massachusetts in 1966. They were fortuitously reacquainted at a dance at Fordham
University in 1969 and married in 1971.
Barbara started her marriage teaching kindergarten for several years, leaving her career to begin her
family. Mother of two daughters, Joellen Hornig of Larchmont, NY and Barbara Trudel of Ithaca, NY,
she devoted her life to her family.
While raising her daughters, Barbara was active in girl scouts, coaching recreational soccer,
founding a girl’s basketball program at Sts. John and Paul school, and assisting the Larchmont Shore
Club swimming, MITL tennis, and sailing teams.
When her children were in high school, Barbara returned to teaching at the Murray Avenue School and
then started an early childhood Development Program at P.S. 403 in the Bronx. Barbara has been an
inspiration to all of her students and has helped numerous children learn to read and love school.
Barbara was a competitive tennis player, enjoyed traveling, and treasured time spent with family and
friends. She enjoyed spending her summers with close friends at the Larchmont Shore Club, where she
was a member since 1954. Always devoted to her family, Barbara was always putting other’s needs
ahead of her own, never letting anything, including her illness, prevent her being there for loved
one’s special moments.
Barbara was a parishioner of Sts. John and Paul Church
Barbara is survived by her loving husband, David, daughters Joellen, Barbara (Steven) Trudel, and
sister Jane Reynolds. Predeceased by her parents John and Jane Cunniffe and her sister Joanne
Cunniffe.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in memory of Barbara J. Hornig to
Swim Across America at PO Box 217 Larchmont, NY 10538.
Visiting hours are Thursday, October 20 and Friday, October 21 from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm at Fox
Funeral Home in Larchmont, NY. A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, October 22 at 10:30 am, Sts. John
and Paul Roman Catholic Church, Larchmont, NY.
