JOHN L. THURSTON
John L. Thurston, 91, longtime resident of Larchmont for 52 years, died Saturday,
October 1 at his home of heart failure.
He grew up in Benton Harbor, Michigan, and attended Antioch College. He worked in the
Truman Administration in Manpower Development from 1949 to 1952, then moving to
Larchmont, where he worked for the United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency from
1953 to 1959. From 1961 to 1978, he worked for the Institute of International Education
in Field Services. After retirement in 1978, he volunteered at the Museum of Natural
History and worked at Anderson's Bookstore.
In 1937, he married Grace Hanford, who died in 1998. Their children are: Susan Shirley
of Rankin Inlet, Canada; Sam Thurston of Lowell, Vermont and Tom Thurston of West
Palm Beach, Florida. He also leaves grandchildren: Raloon Bialek and James M. Shirley
and great-granddaughter, Madeline Bialek.
In lieu of flowers, a donation or a visit may be made to the Rye Marshlands Nature
Center or one of the other nature preserves in the area. A Memorial will take place at
11:00 am on Friday, October 7 at Mamaroneck United Methodist Church, 546 East Boston
Post Road. His presence made the world richer for his family, neighbors and devoted
friends, young and old.
