LILY WARD-SMITH
Lily Ward-Smith passed peacefully on Saturday, July 9, 2005 surrounded by her loving
family. Lily was born in Peithion, Greece. During WW II, as a young girl, she and her
family emigrated as refugees to Ethiopia, Africa where she later married and raised
three children. Her colorful life in Africa included being in the presence of Haile
Lasse, where she shared tea with the Emperor and Royal dignitaries on several occasions.
In 1969, the entire Ward-Smith family relocated to the United States when her husband
accepted a position with the United Nations. Fluent in nine languages, she took pride
in being able to converse with people of various ethnicities. With her door always open,
she was renowned for her talent of multicultural cooking and baking, as well as, her
extensive ecclesiastical knowledge of the Greek Orthodox faith.
Shortly before her passing, Lily was honored by her Church for her unending charitable
works, most especially, for the 30 years of baking the Prosforo (Communion Bread).
Survived by her husband Herbert K. Ward-Smith, sons Paul H.G. Ward-Smith (Lynne),
Stephan K. Ward-Smith (Caroline) and Anthony Ward-Smith (Frances), grandchildren,
Anthony, David, Leah, Stephanie, Nicholas and Kinsley and a brother Harry G.
Alexandridis.
Visitation Tuesday, July 12 from 6-9 pm at COXE & GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME, 767 E Boston
Post Rd. in Mamaroneck, (914)698-5968. Funeral Mass Wednesday, July 13 at 10 am at the
Church of Our Saviour on Westchester Ave. in Rye followed by an interment at Greenwood
Union Cemetery.
