FILOMENA NARDECCHIA MIGDAL
A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 1, for Filomena Nardecchia
Migal, who died suddenly April 19 at the age of 80.
Daughter of Domenic and Hilda Nardecchia, Ms. Migdal was born in Mamaroneck in 1924. She
married Jack P. Migdal and they lived briefly in the Bronx, before returning to
Mamaroneck to raise their family. He died in 1979.
In 1942 Filomena graduated from Mamaroneck High
School and entered the Cadet Nursing program at Fordham Hospital where she
completed certification as a registered nurse during World War II. Also during the war,
she was a volunteer plane-spotter for the Village of Mamaroneck. She subsequently earned
a bachelor of science degree in nursing at Pace University. After working in the field
for a number of years, she returned to Pace to earn a master's degree in community health
nursing and became a clinician. She worked in the emergency room, and later became head
nurse in the chest clinic at Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx.
Filomena continued her studies to qualify as a certified diabetes educator. She then
worked at the Lighthouse, teaching blind men and women how to manage their diabetes.
She continued working at the Lighthouse after her retirement from Jacobi.
In recent years, she became active in the Mamaroneck Historical Society as a member,
then secretary. She was involved in structuring educational programs for school children
in connection with the restoration of the Historic one-room schoolhouse, located in
Harbor Island Park, Mamaroneck. She also continued to enjoy dancing the Lindy.
Filomena Nardecchia Migdal is survived by two children, Jean Migdal and Michael Migdal,
by her sister Elaine Nardecchia Aldrich, brotherin-law ArthurR. Aldrich, nephew Arthur A.
Aldrich, his wife Christina, and their son Daniel, all of Suffern, NY, and by her
companion Leo Spinelli of Mamaroneck.
A memorial tribute will be held Sunday, May 1 at 4 p.m. at the Coxe and Graziano Funeral
Home in the Zion Memorial Chapel, 785 E. Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck. In lieu of flowers,
donations for a memorial may be sent to the Mamaroneck Historical Society, P.O. Box 776,
Mamaroneck, New York, 10543. Checks should be made payable to Mamaroneck Historical
Society and indicate Filomena Migdal Memorial Fund on the memo line.
