WILLIAM THOMAS AITCHISON
William Thomas Aitchison, 95, who lived his entire life in Mamaroneck,
died March 30, 2005 at his home.
Born on Orienta Point January 3, 1910, he was the oldest son of Thomas and Elizabeth
(Peters) Aitchison. He had a keen interest in horticulture and maintained his own large
greenhouse. As well as being part of a family landscaping business with his father and
brother, he was for thirteen years a partner in the Aitchison and Robins Tree Service.
In 1959, William became an employee of the Parks Department for the Town of Mamaroneck,
switching to the Highway Department in 1961. In 1966, he was appointed Highway
Superintendent, a position he filled until his retirement in 1980.
He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church, a longtime member of The Hook and Ladder
Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the local garden club.
In January 2003, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Marjorie (Greenwell)
Aitchison and by his brother Thomas in 1994. Survivors include three sons: William R.
and James T. Aitchison of Mamaroneck as well as Colin J. Aitchison of Somers; two
daughters: Carol J. Aitchison of Larchmont and Mary A. Blackmer of Vermont; a sister,
Melrose Florio of Misslintown, PA; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren.
Visitation at O'Neill Funeral Home on Friday, April 1 from 2 pm-4 pm and 7 pm-9 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, April 2 at 9:30 am, at Most Holy Trinity Church,
Mamaroneck, followed by interment at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye. O'NEILL FUNERAL
