DR. ALFONZO B. OWENS
Dr. Alfonzo B. Owens, Jr., 81, a retired dentist
and longtime resident of Mount Vernon, died on December 23,
2004, after a long illness. Dr. Owens was born November 13,
1923 in Decatur, AL to Alfonzo Owens and Emma Pearl Allen.
He attended public schools in Decatur and graduated in 1941 from
White Plains High School. Dr. Owens earned a Bachelors Degree
from Talladega College in Alabama. He received his D.D.S. degree
from Western Reserve School of Dentistry in Cleveland, OH in
1948. Dr. Owens served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1954.
On November 30, 1946, he married Helen Edwards in Cleveland, OH.
They lived in Mamaroneck, NY before moving to Mount Vernon in
1957. Dr. Owens opened his dental office in 1950 in Mamaroneck
and practiced general dentistry for over 50 years. He was a
longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon,
NY, where he indulged his passion for choral music by singing
in the chancel choir.
Dr. Owens will be remembered for his
gentle and engaging manner, his quiet dignity and his love
for his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen,
of Mount Vernon, NY; two sons: Dr. Alfonzo B. Owens, III (Kim)
of Mount Vernon, and Gregory G. Owens (Terry) of Albany, NY;
one daughter, Dr. Susan Owens-Billups (Daniel) of New Rochelle,
NY; and five grandchildren.
Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 227
East Lincoln Avenue, Mount Vernon, NY 10552. Visitation hours
are from 3-5 pm and the Wake from 7-9 pm on December 29, 2004.
The Home Going Service is at 10 am on Thursday, December 30,
