MICHAEL BARCLAY
Michael Barclay, a resident of Mamaroneck
for over 50 years, passed away Thursday, December 23, 2004
in the Sound Shore Medical Center. He was 95 years old.
Michael
was born in New Rochelle and was the son of Harry and Clara
Berkowitz. Mr. Barclay was the devoted husband of the late
Edna Cooney Barclay, whom he married in New York City on
March 23, 1943 before leaving to serve in the Armed Forces
with the 595th Signal Air Warning Battalion in New Guinea.
He earned his bachelors and law degrees from Fordham University.
Mr. Barclay was admitted into practice in New York and before
the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, DC.
He also entered into a successful insurance career which
lasted 50 years.
Besides his love for gardening, Mr. Barclay
involved himself in many pursuits while raising his family.
He was President of many organizations, including President
of the Shore Acres Point Corp., President of the University
Club of Mamaroneck, President of the Larchmont/Mamaroneck
Community Concert Association, and President of the United
Way of Mamaroneck. He held the honor of having the longest
tenure of anyone serving in the Village of Mamaroneck and
having the village join the county-wide United Way. Mr. Barclay
was also a member of the Village of Mamaroneck Parks & Recreation
Commission and on the board of directors of the Family Service
of Westchester for over 10 years. In honor of Mr. Barclay's
civic efforts, a Proclamation was issued from the Village
of Mamaroneck from the then Mayor Suzi Oppenheimer declaring
Sunday, October 25, 1981 as MIKE BARCLAY DAY.
He is survived
by his children: Michael W. of Petaluma, CA; Robert J.
and his wife, Meg of Mamaroneck, NY; Justine Denison and
her
husband, Brian of Schaghticoke, NY. Grandchildren: Robert
Michael Barclay, Rebecca Ashley Barclay, Margaret Denison,
Suzanna Denison, Aura Barclay and Lydia Barclay; great-granddaughter,
Grace; his brother, Joseph and sister, Regina Sacks. Besides
his wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Maurice.
A
private Graveside Service was conducted on December 24,
2004. A Memorial
Service will be held on Sunday, January 23, 2005, 1 pm,
at Temple Israel, Pinebrook Blvd., New Rochelle, NY.
