CHARLES "CHUCK OR CHIC" WIELGUS
Charles "Chuck or Chic" Wielgus passed away on
November 11 (Veteran’s Day), 2004 at Lawrence Hospital in
Bronxville, NY. He was 81 years old. Born on January 2, 1923 in
Hadley, MA, he was the son of Joseph Wielgus and Anna Armata,
who had immigrated to the United States from Poland through
llis Island in 1917.
He grew up in Thompsonville, CT, graduated from Enfield High
School in 1940 and attended Bryant College in Smithfield, RI.
Mr. Wielgus served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 to 1946.
He subsequently graduated Summa Cum Laude from Bryant College
in 1947, where he was the Editor-in-Chief of the college
newspaper, President of the Student Council, President of the
Honor Society and President of the Intra-Fraternity Council.
From 1947 to 1956, Mr. Wielgus worked for the Bigelow-Sanford
Carpet Company, where he rose to the position of Assistant
Personnel Manager. In 1956, he joined The Reuben H. Donnelley
Corporation as its Director of Employee Relations. He stayed
with the company through 1971 at which tme he was Vice President
for Organizational Development, Employee & Public Relations.
In 1971, he joined Dun & Bradstreet Companies, Inc. as its Vice
President of Personnel. In 1976, he was named a Senior Vice
President; and in 1983, he was named Executive Vice President.
In 1977, Mr. Wielgus was recognized with a Honorary Doctor of
Science in Business Administration Degree from Bryant College.
He retired in 1988 and continued to live in Larchmont, NY,
where he and his wife, Irene had resided since 1962. Throughout
his life, Mr. Wielgus was very much involved in various church,
community and political activities. He was a member of the Sts.
John and Paul Parish. For more than ten years, he served as a
Director of the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Westchester
and a Trustee for Operation Hope. He was a longtime member of
the Business Education Advisory Commission for the New York City
Board of Education. Mr. Wielgus was also extremely active in
New York State, Westchester and local politics, serving in
various Chairmanship, Executive Committee and Board of
Directors roles. He served as Chairman of the Town of Mamaroneck
Republican Party for ten years. In retirement, he was especially
active with the Larchmont Lion’s Club, Knights of Columbus and
the Old Guard.
Mr. Wielgus is survived by his wife of 55 years, Irene Helen
Graham and three children: Charles, Jr. of Colorado Springs, CO;
Paul of Barrington, RI; and Martie of Mamaroneck, NY. He was
also a loving grandfather to ten childen. He will forever be
remembered for his work ethic, accomplishment, humility,
integrity, gentleness, kindness and complete dedication to his
family.
Friends may visit the Fox Funeral Home in Larchmont on Tuesday
(November 16) between 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial
will be held at Sts. John and Paul Church in Larchmont on
Wednesday (November 17) at 10 am. Burial will be at Gate of
Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY. In lieu of flowers, the
family asks that donations be sent to Sts. John and Paul
Church.
