JOHN CLINTON TIMMERMANN
John Clinton Timmermann, 96, a 47-year resident of Mamaroneck,
died at home in Shelburne, VT, Saturday, October 9, 2004.
An electrical engineering
graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), Mr. Timmermann
joined the Western Electric Company, predecessor of Lucent Technologies, in the 1930’s.
Beginning as an equipment engineer, Mr. Timmermann took part in planning the
first microwave transmission services of the Bell System. He was also a member of the
group assigned to Project Mercury, planning and installing space stations around the
world to monitor the first United States’ men in space. He said that he particularly
enjoyed taking part in a test of the Canary Islands space station, where he joined
in a simulated conversation with the capsule passengers and a trial monitoring of
their condition. In 1963, he received a citation from Western Electric for his
contribution to defense projects. Even more travel was involved when he directed
the planning and installation of a comprehensive private-line telephone system
for all Western Electric factories and distributing houses. At his retirement in 1973,
he was assistant manager for planning.
Mr. Timmermann was born to Rosa May (Philips) and John Clinton Timmermann in Plains,
GA, on January 9, 1908. The village later became famous as the birthplace of
President Jimmy Carter. Since the population of Plains was and is about 400,
it is not surprising that at one time, relatives of Mr. Timmermann and President Carter
were partners in business. Mr. Timmermann was married in 1933 to Anne Latrobe New
at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. The couple lived in
the city and in Mamaroneck until moving to Shelburne, VT in 2000. Mr. Timmermann
served as a member of the vestry and property chair of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church,
Mamaroneck, and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Shelburne.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Timmermann is survived by a daughter and son-in-law,
Jan and Harris Abbott of Essex Junction, VT; three grandchildren: Deborah Anne
Abbott of Istanbul, Turkey; Christopher Abbott and his fiancee, Robin Burgmeier,
of South Burlington, VT; Marilyn Abbott of Oxford, England; a sister and brother-in-law,
Emily and R.J. Pearson of Southern Pines, NC and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, J. Randolph Timmermann.
A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Shelburne, VT, on
Wednesday, October 13, at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St.
Thomas Episcopal Church, 168 W. Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck 10543 or to the
Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, 228 North Winooski Avenue, Burlington, VT 05401.
Arrangements are by Stephen C. Gregory Services of Shelburne.
