SUSAN D. SLAUGHTER

Susan. D. Slaughter, widow of Lawrence H. Slaughter and active participant of many Westchester and Larchmont organizations, died December 31, 2003 at Calvary Hospital of lung cancer. She worked as a medical technologist for several years in both Michigan and Washington, DC during the 1950s, and worked at the Council for Tobacco Research and its successor organizations as a medical librarian from 1975 until retirement in 1992. Throughout her life, she volunteered with many nonprofit organizations. She was a member of the Board of the Friends of Larchmont Public Library, and St. Augustine’s Parish Council, as well as a volunteer at Meals on Wheels, the Sound Shore Medical Center library, the League of Women Voters, and the Cloisters Museum library. She received a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology at the University of Michigan in 1952, Masters in Medical Library Science at Long Island University in 1975, and a Masters at Columbia University in Medieval Studies in 1997. She strongly supported the continuing education of herself and everyone around her.

Born July 31, 1930 in Minneapolis, MN to Ralph and Mary Dwan, she was a lifelong learner, and adventurous traveler, with a strong love of both art and history. She grew up in Washington, DC, where she attended Blessed Sacrament School and Georgetown Visitation High School. She was President of Kappa Kappa Gamma during her time at University of Michigan. She married Lawrence H. Slaughter in May 1955, and they made many trips, to Europe, Mexico, Africa, and Asia, over their 41 years together until his death in 1996, and she continued to travel to Turkey, Russia, Croatia, Iceland, and other locations during the subsequent years. For each trip, she researched in detail the history and sites of artistic and cultural importance.

Sue Slaughter was a kind, generous, considerate and inquisitive person. She was someone who liked to learn, to listen and to laugh. She was thorough and organized in all her activities, especially with the many voluntary organizations and with her many travels with her family. She deeply enjoyed her family and her travels to visit her children and grandchildren, and was treasured by her family and friends.

She is survived by four children: Anne Perrote (Madison, WI), Susie Kinzie (Seneca, WI), Sarah Slaughter (Cambridge, MA), and Lawrence Slaughter (London, England), eleven grandchildren, and her brother and sisters. The family would like to thank the staff of Sound Shore Medical Center, Schaefer Extended Care Center, and Calvary Hospital for their kind and helpful care during her brief illness. Donations may be made in her name to the Visiting Nurses Services of Westchester, Friend of the Larchmont Public Library, or Catholic Charities.

Visitation will be at the Fox Funeral Home in Larchmont, NY on Friday, January 9 (2-4 pm, 7-9 pm). Funeral mass will be at St. Augustine’s Church on Saturday, January 10 at 10 a.m., with interment following at Gates of Heaven.
