William John Hunter

The family of William John Hunter mourns the loss of a devoted husband, wonderful father of five children and grandfather of ten. He passed away on November 29, 2009 at the age of 88 in the warm embrace of his family, following a long illness. William leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Theresa, and their children, Elizabeth Hunter of Manhattan; Anne MacArtney (Kenneth) of Larchmont; William Hunter, Jr. (Julia) of Gaithersburg, MD; Leslie Farina (Jeffrey) of Larchmont; and Maura Templeton (David) of Montclair, NJ. He is also survived by Mary Hunter, his sister-in-law, and his beloved grandchildren: Jessica, Alison, Keith, Caroline, Thomas, Christin, Catherine, Leslie, Christine, and Shawn. He raised his family with complete devotion, and an unwavering appreciation for integrity and truth.

Born on March 27, 1921 to Anna and Robert Hunter, William grew up in a Civil War-era brownstone home located on Pioneer Street, a cobblestone-lined street in Brooklyn, NY. He was the youngest of eleven children and loved New York City for all of the decades that he lived and worked there.

William served in the 1st Army Air Force in England and France during WWII, and received campaign medals for the American and EMEA Theatres. The war ended on VE-Day as he was enroute to service in the Pacific Theatre. Following the war, he worked for United Airlines and subsequently served as inter-airline liaison for the Port of New York at LaGuardia Airport. He later was appointed Executive Secretary of the Real Estate Board of New York.

Family will receive friends at a wake on Friday evening, December 4 from 7– 9 PM at Fox Funeral Home; a funeral mass will be held on Saturday, December 5 at 10:00 AM at St. Augustine Church, both in Larchmont, NY.
