Gazette Ceases Publication: Donates Archives to LHS

In 2010, the Larchmont Gazette ceased publication. In 2011 the publishers donated all contents to the Larchmont Historical Society, which will continue to make the Gazette archives available online.

William Harrison Maynard, Jr.

William Harrison Maynard, Jr. died Thursday at his home in Larchmont, NY with his family by his side. He was born to William H. and Charlotte (Wadlin) Maynard in Poughkeepsie, NY in 1929. He grew up in Highland, New York with his brother Frederick and sister Audrey (deceased).

Bill was the president of his class at Highland High and played for the state champion Highland High football team. He graduated from Union College in 1950 and served his country in Korea as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army’s 936th Field Artillery Battalion. In 1954, Bill married Marilyn (Goewey) of Newburgh, New York. Bill and Marilyn settled in Larchmont, NY. to raise their four children. The couple spent their summers on Martha’s Vineyard since 1980.

A successful career in advertising led to roles as Managing Director of Creative Services for Ted Bates Worldwide and the International Advertising Manager of the Colgate-Palmolive Company. Bill has also worked as a sports writer, a magazine contributing editor, and has written five books for children and gave motivational talks to employees and clients all over the world. Bill was also an accomplished painter and pianist and an avid golfer and sailor at Larchmont Yacht Club.

Bill is survived by his loving wife Marilyn, his brother Fred (Venus), daughter Laurie and sons William H. Maynard III, Christopher and Mary (Devine), and Jeffrey, and grandchildren, William H. Maynard IV, Sarah Oommen, Elvis Maynard, Wyatt Maynard, Hannah Maynard, Luke Maynard and Liam Maynard. Also by brothers-in-law William Goewey and Arthur Goewey (Peggy) and nieces and nephews Lisa Worden (Wayne), Karen Horth (Jason), Larry Miller (Judy), Cathy Dalton (Andy), Susan Goewey Carey (Bill), David Goewey (Sarah), Ted Goewey, and Elizabeth Goewey Robbins (Michael).

Visiting hours will be held at Fox Funeral Home, 2080 Boston Post Road, Larchmont, New York from 2-4 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. on Sunday, April 18. A celebration of Bill’s life and memorial service will be Wednesday, April 21 at 11 A.M. at St John’s Episcopal Church, 4 West Fountain Square, Larchmont, New York In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Community Baptist Church of Gay Head, Box 2787, Vineyard Haven, MA 02573; or to St John’s Episcopal Church, Fountain Square, Larchmont, New York, 10538.
