John A. Betzig, Jack, of Mamaroneck, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2010. Born at home in Larchmont, NY on June 22, 1930, to William B. and Evelyne O’Callaghan Betzig. He owned and operated Manhattan Engineering Bureau (MEB), a fire prevention company started by his father in 1917, headquartered in New York City.
On April 24, 1954, he married Katharine Bohmert, the love of his life, at Most Holy Trinity Church in Mamaroneck, NY. He is survived by Katharine, his wife of 56 years, six children, Michael Betzig (Lucia), Kate Spader (David), Betty Scanlon (Eddie), Karen Marache (Herb), Madelyn Jolliffe (Bruce) and John A. Betzig, Jr. (Vicky), his sister, Barbara White and 14 grandchildren. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his infant son Jackie, his granddaughter, Maggie Elizabeth Scanlon as well as his siblings Evelyne, Jean and Bill.
Jack served as an officer in the United States Navy during the Korean War on the LST 880. He was a lifelong parishioner of Sts. John & Paul RC Church, lifelong member of Orienta Beach Club, Boy Scout Troop Leader and he enjoyed boating and spending time on Long Island Sound with his family. Jack was passionate about Swim Across America LIS and volunteered for 19 years with his family.
Visiting on Monday, October 11 from 3-7 PM at Coxe & Graziano Funeral Home, 767 E. Boston Post Rd., Mamaroneck, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11AM on Tuesday, October 12 at Sts. John & Paul RC Church, Larchmont, NY. Interment will follow at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to Swim Across America, PO Box 217, Larchmont, NY 10538.
