Jerry Smith

Jerry Smith, age 69 of Mamaroneck, sadly on June 28, 2009. He was born July 24, 1939 in Yonkers, NY to James and Catherine (Kate Mahoney) Smith. Jerry graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School and was a great athlete, loving all sports from a very young age.

Jerry married Cathee Santore on October 11, 1957. The family moved to Mamaroneck in 1965 where Jerry worked as a butcher at Fava’s Market for many years before buying his business, Central Avenue Taxi in Yonkers, which he owned and operated for 35 years. He happily retired in 2004. Jerry was an incredible joke teller, who loved to make everyone laugh! He was the co-originator of St. Vito’s CYO Basketball team, a great accordion player (his favorite tune was Malaguena) and an amazing movie and trivia buff with a broad base of knowledge that he was more than willing to share. He always loved a good time with his family and friends. His hero was Mickey Mantle and Jerry’s greatest passions were the Yankees and the Giants. Jerry was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who cherished his family and always put them first. He lived life on his own terms and on a daily basis showed endless bravery and courage. His humor and unyielding resolve is a testament that you can live on within the hearts that you touch and we know that he will. We will all miss his presence very much. Jerry was truly the wind beneath his family’s wings.
