Isabella A. Messina, daughter of Rosa and Joseph Tedeschi, passed away on September 3 at Sarah Neuman Nursing Home. She was born in NYC on July 30, 1914 and was a lifelong resident of the Village of Mamaroneck. She married Philip J. Messina on June 21, 1936 who predeceased her in 1987 as did her son Charles in 1985. As a young woman, Isabella taught embroidery in her own shop on Mamaroneck Ave. After her marriage, she was a homemaker and community volunteer.
In 1975, she became an HR volunteer and worked tirelessly until 2000 on the distribution of smoke alarms for the needy and Senior Citizens, Surplus Food Give Away, Holiday Gift Certificate and the Ambulance Fund. She served as sec’y/treas of the Washingtonville Neighborhood Program. Of her many accomplishments, her proudest was the award of over one million dollars to Mamaroneck homeowners through the Westchester County Development Program. Through her efforts, the Village was the first Westchester community to start the Urban County low interest and grants program for which she was honored by then county legislator Diane Keane in April 1985.
Isabella also served on the Washingtonville Fiesta Committee and the Boards of Directors of the United Way and KEEPS. She was past president of the Mamaroneck Columbiettes, past Regent and District Deputy of the Catholic Daughters and a parishioner of both Holy Trinity and St. Vito’s Churches.
Isabella is survived by her son Joseph and his wife Donna of Larchmont, her grandsons Joseph (wife Tanya) of Rye, Gregory (wife Jill) of Carmel and Michael (wife Amanda) of Mamaroneck. She also leaves behind seven great – grandchildren. Visitation Tuesday, September 9 from 2-4 and 7-9pm at COXE & GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME, 767 E. Boston Post Rd, Mamaroneck, 914-698-5968. Funeral Mass Wednesday, September 9 at 10am at Sts. John & Paul Church in Larchmont followed by interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
