Gwladys Jones Hoffman, 91, of Middlebrook Farms, died Monday, September 28, 2009 at home surrounded by her family.
She was born July 22, 1918 in Utica, NY a daughter of David and Gwen Rowlands Jones. She graduated from Utica Free Academy and worked as a dental assistant. She was a member of Moriah Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir which her father directed. Gwladys married Edwin C. Hoffman on August 6, 1942 in Columbus, GA where Lt. Hoffman was stationed in the Army. After his discharge, they moved from New Hartford to Larchmont in Westchester County, NY where they lived from 1946 to 1972.
While there Gwladys was active in the Larchmont Women’s Club, the 24th Twig of Mamaroneck, the PTA and the Girl Scout Council where she was a leader and Director of the local branch. She served as a deacon at the Larchmont Avenue Church, was the Treasurer of the Twig Thrift & Commission Shop and was a Hospital Volunteer at United Hospital in Port Chester. She also was active in the Orienta Beach Club Ladies Auxiliary and its Bowling League.
The Hoffmans moved to Heritage Village in Southbury, CT in 1972 where they lived until May 2009. While living in Southbury, she served as President of the Heritage Village Library, as Treasurer of The Women’s Exchange and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She also enjoyed her bridge clubs, travels and sports with her husband and friends.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 67 years, Edwin Charles Hoffman, Sr., three sons, Christopher Robert Hoffman of Cos Cob, CT, Edwin Charles Hoffman, Jr. and wife Ann (Gambling) of Bedford, NY and Peter Gregory Hoffman and wife Heidi (Metzger) of Arlington, MA; two daughters, Pamela Ann Hoffman of Waterville, NY and Jennifer Ann (Hoffman) Lugus and husband Kristjan of Milford, CT. She also leaves five grandchildren, E C Hoffman III of Vail, CO, Elizabeth Brunings Hoffman of New York City, Emily Jones Hoffman of Arlington, MA, Hans Kristjan Lugus and Katherine Ann Lugus of Milford, CT.
She also leaves a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Gladys Hoffman of Southbury, CT and nieces, nephews and cousins in the US and in Wales. She was predeceased by a beloved sister, Hilda Jones Williams and brother-in-law Stewart H. Williams, Sr. and cousins, Claude and Rita Rowlands.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 AM at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford with Rev. Jay G. Williams III officiating. Interment will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park. Calling hours will be Saturday from 9:30 to 11 prior to the service.
