Gazette Ceases Publication: Donates Archives to LHS

In 2010, the Larchmont Gazette ceased publication. In 2011 the publishers donated all contents to the Larchmont Historical Society, which will continue to make the Gazette archives available online.

George Wilson Wallace

A resident of Larchmont and Mamaroneck for nearly sixty years, George Wilson Wallace died peacefully Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at the New York State Veterans’ Home at Montrose. He was 95.

Mr. Wallace was an executive with the Reader’s Digest for over thirty-five years retiring in 1985. Prior to the Reader’s Digest he was an executive with NBC during the early days of television.

Mr. Wallace was born in 1914 in Springville, NY. He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and was an active alumnus throughout his life. It was at the University of Pennsylvania that he met and married his wife of 42 years Jane Wallace who proceeded him in death.

Mr. Wallace was a veteran of WWII, receiving the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts.

He is a former member of Orienta Beach Club, a former longtime member of the Larchmont Yacht Club,and a life member of the Union League Club in New York City. He is survived by his daughter Susan Wallace McCallion,of Mamaroneck and four grandchildren; Dr. Katherine Kohari, of New York City, Josephine Amelia Shister, a graduate student at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, George Kevin Ian Hynes an actor, model and student at the Gow School, and Kenneth Foard McCallion, Jr. age 3.

A service will be held at St. John’s Church, Larchmont, where Mr. Wallace was a member of the parish for 60 years. 1 Fountain Square, Larchmont on Wednesday, August 18th at 10:00 am.
