Gazette Ceases Publication: Donates Archives to LHS


In 2010, the Larchmont Gazette ceased publication. In 2011 the publishers donated all contents to the Larchmont Historical Society, which will continue to make the Gazette archives available online.

George J. McLaughlin

George J. McLaughlin, a resident of Larchmont since 1993, died July 21, 2010. Beloved husband to Virginia. He attended Roosevelt Aviation School, CurtissWright Technical Training School, Buffalo, N.Y. , Cooper Union Engineering School in NYC. During WWII he was an instructor at Army Aviation School and then at Curtiss-Wright as a service representative assigned to the Reno Army Air Base until the war’s end. He returned to Roosevelt, Long Island as an instructor in civilian aviation school.

In 1948 he was transferred to Grumman Aircraft Corporation as a tool designer and became supervisor of Standards and Program Manager on the OV-1, S2E, C2A, E2C airplanes until his retirement in 1975. He was recalled by Grumman where he made hundreds of drawings for the Space Shuttle, Gulfstream, F-14 Fighter Jet, and Boeing 767 aircraft. He was chairman of the Long Island chapter of the American Society of Tool Engineers and appointed to the National Standards Committee. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and served on the executive committee on Long Island. He was a member of the American Society of Metals and author of an article in thir Metals Handbook. He was a member of the USA Standards Institute, formerly, the ASA and author of their Standard on Reamer Bushings.

George¬†was Parish Council president at St. Killian’s Church, Farmingdale, L.I. He served as CCD Program coordinator for a program of 2000 students and 80 teachers. George served as a Lector for 16 years and a Special Minister of the Eucharist for 10 years.

George was elected to the Board of Directors of his co-op in Larchmont and served a six year term. His first wife Marie (nee Halliday) died in 1992. He is survived by his second wife, Virginia (nee Vessa).
