George Bradford Berridge, a resident of Larchmont for 48 years, passed away peacefully at home on August 2nd, after a long illness. He was 81. George was the son of Marjorie George Berridge and William Lloyd Berridge. He was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1928, and grew up in Ann Arbor. He earned 3 degrees from the University of Michigan – a BA, an MBA and a JD. He achieved top scholastic honors throughout his high school, undergraduate and graduate years, attaining membership in Phi Beta Kappa, receiving the top undergraduate prize in economics, achieving membership in the Order of the Coif, and becoming an Associate Editor of the Law Review.
George served in the U.S. Navy Supply Corps for 18 months as a contracting officer during the Korean War. In 1955, he joined the NY Law Firm of Chadbourne, Park, Whiteside & Wolff, working primarily on the TWA account. He then joined American Airlines in 1961, serving as a General Attorney and then VP Law and Assistant General Counsel. He then became General Counsel, Senior VP and a Director of American Airline’s hotel subsidiaries, including Americana Hotels. In 1975, National Bank of North America (which soon became NatWest USA) asked George to serve as Senior VP and Counsel Loan Administration, and he soon became General Counsel and Senior VP until retirement in 1993. He greatly valued close friendships with colleagues during his career and after retirement. He was a member of the New York Bar and the National Bar Association, and served on several airline and banking committees.
George served on the board of the Montessori School of Westchester in the 1960s. After retirement, he was appointed to Larchmont’s Board of Assessment Review and was Treasurer of the Larchmont Historical Society, a group that he greatly enjoyed. He was a long-time member and dedicated supporter of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Larchmont. An avid racer of small sailboats, at one time he was President of the Rhodes 18 Class, and a member of Horseshoe Harbor Yacht Club.
He loved taking his children and their friends sailing. Great books, great music and cruising were his favorite pastimes. He enjoyed foreign and domestic travel, as long as travel by ship was at least part of the itinerary.
He is survived by: his brother, Dr. William Lloyd Berridge Jr. of Chelsea, Michigan and his loving wife of 52 years(!), Mary Lee Robinson Berridge, their four children George B. Berridge Jr, Elizabeth A. Berridge-Corrigan, Mary Lloyd Berridge-Troy, and Robert L. Berridge; three grandchildren Natalie B. Troy, Graham B. Troy, and Sadie R. Corrigan; a step granddaughter Allison Hines; sons-in-law Kevin F. Corrigan, M. Clark Troy and daughter-inlaw Susan Mountjoy; and several close cousins, nieces and nephews. He was a devoted husband and a very proud father, grandfather and father-in-law. Family was always George’s top priority.
