Gazette Ceases Publication: Donates Archives to LHS


In 2010, the Larchmont Gazette ceased publication. In 2011 the publishers donated all contents to the Larchmont Historical Society, which will continue to make the Gazette archives available online.

Betty Rooney

Betty Rooney, of Mamaroneck, died on Monday November 9, 2009 peacefully at home surrounded by her family and friends. Betty was born June 3, 1935 in County Limerick, Ireland to the late John and Eileen Gleeson Hickey. She immigrated to the United States in 1955. On Oct 6th, 1962 she married Laurence (Al) Rooney at Blessed Sacrament Church in New Rochelle NY.

For many years Betty taught nursery school at Saxon Woods Country Day School in Mamaroneck, NY before her retirement in 2000. Betty loved to sing and entertain; her voice will truly be missed by all. She was the president of the Mt. Vernon Irish American Association for many years.

She is survived by her husband, her son John Rooney and wife Michelle, her daughter Patricia Fox and husband Sean, six grandchildren, Michael, Caitlin, Siobhan, Kathleen, Meaghan and Fiona. as well as four brothers, Paddy, John, Noel, and Cecil Hickey, one sister, Rita Longo and a large number of nieces and nephews and friends. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her son Michael in 1993, her grandson, Brendan in 2005 and her brother Bart Hickey in 2007.

Friends may call from 2-4 & 7-9PM on Wednesday, November 11 at the COXE and GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME, 767 E. Boston Post Rd., Mamaroneck, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10AM on Thursday, November 12 at Most Holy Trinity Church, Mamaroneck, NY. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Rye Brook, NY. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Most Holy Trinity Church and the Mamaroneck EMS, 220 North Barry Ave. Ext., Mamaroneck, NY 10543.
