Belle Kirschner Harmon

Belle Kirschner Harmon, daughter of John and Anna Kirschner, was born August 4, 1906 in New Haven, CT; she died February 8 in Pompano Beach, FL, at the age of 103.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Bert Harmon, in 1991, her sister Sylvia Cohn, and her daughter Carol Lane, in 2004. She is survived by her son James Harmon and daughter-in-law Jane Harmon of Weston, CT, her grandchildren Wendy Zeifer, Deborah HarmonSeder, Laurie Feit, Douglas Harmon, and Jennifer Harmon, and her great grandchildren Dan Seder, Rachel Zeifer, Brad Zeifer and Amelia Seder.

All of her life Belle was the epitome of an elegant, fashionable, well-dressed woman. After moving from New York City to Mamaroneck, NY, she capitalized on her abilities in both fashion and business, and in 1942 opened a women’s apparel boutique, Jane Allen, naming the store after the middle names of her daughter Carol and son James. Jane Allen had a loyal following and was the major women’s retail establishment in Mamaroneck for 30 years.

Upon retirement from retailing, she and her husband lived in Rye, NY, Westhampton, NY, and Pompano Beach, FL. Belle, nicknamed “Gum,” was a loving wife, devoted mother, adoring grandmother, and caring, considerate, generous friend. She was the center of her family. Lively, well read and always well dressed, Belle was the focus of many family and friend celebrations and visits. Her vigorous and loving presence, lit by her welcoming smile and unfailing interest in others, will be deeply missed. It will be very hard to accept the fact that Gum is no longer with us.

Interment will be private. Donations in her memory may be made online to MDA, specifically designated to Myotonic muscular dystrophy, at www.mda.org , or sent to MDA, Direct Marketing Department, 3300 East Sunrise Drive, Tucson AZ 85718.
