Gazette Ceases Publication: Donates Archives to LHS

In 2010, the Larchmont Gazette ceased publication. In 2011 the publishers donated all contents to the Larchmont Historical Society, which will continue to make the Gazette archives available online.

Barbara Mae Willetts Torey

Barbara Torey, of West Hartford, CT, formerly of Larchmont, NY died peacefully on February 27, 2009. She was the devoted wife , of 51 years, to Donald Clifford Torey, who predeceased her in 2007. She is survived by her son Donald W. Torey of Darien, CT and her daughter Susan Torey Keller of West Hartford, CT, as well as by her daughter-in-law, Jennifer, grandsons Jason and Dylan, son-in-law Stephen Keller and grandson Kevin. She is also survived by her brother Herbert I. Willetts of NC, his wife Mary, and their children.

Barbara was born in Troy, NY on Oct. 29, 1927. She was a graduate of Rye Country Day School, and Skidmore College with a B.S. in Nutrition. She was a teacher for 32 years at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Larchmont, NY. She also volunteered for over 25 years with the Youth Employment Service at Mamaroneck High School, Mamaroneck, NY. She loved her family, and delighted in attending her grandsons’ various athletic events.

In the final year of her life, she was a resident of Hamilton Heights, W. Hartford, CT. The family is deeply appreciative of the kind and attentive staff who helped make the residence her home, especially her loving nurse/companion Beatrice.

Calling hours will be held from 3-5 p.m. on March 6, 2009 at Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave., W. Hartford. The funeral will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 4 Fountain Square, Larchmont, NY 10538, with a notation that the gift is for the Nursery School, in memory of Barbara Torey., Feb. 2009
