“The MHS orchestra is having a very interesting and unique project going on during the month of May with Jon Deak, of the New York Philhamonic,” advised Alex Romanov, the orchestra teacher at Mamaroneck High School. The student musicians would be learning composition techniques with composer Jon Deak in the first part of the month. They would also be rehearsing and later performing a composition by Mr. Deak.

Mr. Deak is the associate principal bassist and creative education associate of the New York Philharmonic. He is also an accomplished composer. His pieces have been performed at music festivals around the world and by the New York Philharmonic , the National Symphony Orchestra and similar groups, including those in Chicago, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Seattle, New Jersey, Atlanta and Colorado.
On Wednesday, May 26, as part of the school-wide spring concert, the orchestra presented “Condominiums on the Hot Stove (Home on the Range) by Mr. Deak. Earlier in the day, newly composed works by some of the students were featured at a Celebration of the Arts program in the school library.
