Murphy Resigns from VOM Board

Less than a week after withdrawing from the race for Town of Mamaroneck supervisor, Tom Murphy today announced he is stepping down from his Village of Mamaroneck trustee position as well, effective June 1, 2009.

In an email to the Gazette tonight, Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Kathleen Savolt quoted Mr. Murphy’s resignation letter: “I have enjoyed my time as a Trustee and I am happy that the Village has made so much progress in the last few years. I have particularly enjoyed working with Mayor Savolt and the current Board, I am sure they will continue to move the Village forward. My reasons for resigning are strictly personal and I look forward to resuming my role as proud (non-office-holding) citizen of our lovely Village.”

Mayor Savolt praised Mr. Murphy, saying, “While everyone in the Village will certainly miss Tom’s exemplary service to the Village, we wish him and his family well.”  She announced her intention to appoint current Trustee Toni Pergola Ryan to serve as Deputy Mayor, and she will need to appoint someone to serve out Mr. Murphy’s term as trustee. Anyone interested in serving and who meets the requirements for the office should contact her at, or at Mamaroneck Village Hall. Trustees must be at least eighteen years of age, a registered voter and a resident of the Village of Mamaroneck. The position pays $5,000 per year.

Tom is a man of good sense who only wanted the best for the village he will be missed – I hope that as good a person can be found to replace him.

Tom has certainly demonstrated the meaning of public service during his tenure as a Village of Mamaroneck Trustee. Whether one agreed or disagreed with Tom on his political positions or policies, he is to be lauded for his endeavors in espousing and defending his positions.

Tom’s service to the Village of Mamaroneck underscores the true sense of volunteering one’s time and dedication to community and in turn strengthening the democratic process by his committment to the Village and all its residents. I wish Tom all the best in whatever the future holds and the fullest enjoyment in his role as proud (non-office-holding) –and I add a well respected– citizen of the Village of Mamaroneck.

In addition to all the good work Tom Murphy has done for the VOM, he has made major inroads in increasing communication with village residents. I will miss Tom’s regular email letters. They were as informative as they were transparent. I have never felt so “in the know” as I have during Tom’s tenure. Tom Murphy will be sorely missed by my family and most of Mamaroneck.
