The Tri-municipal Human Rights Commission was disbanded last year. But their tradition of hosting a celebration to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will continue. To that end, community members are asked to submit honoree nominations for the 23rd annual program to be held January 13, 2010 at the Emelin Theater at 7:30 pm.
“We’re working very hard on a tri-municipal effort to see that we continue to have an interesting, productive and educational program,” said Mamaroneck Town Supervisor Valerie O’Keeffe, co-coordinator of the event with Larchmont Village Trustee Anne McAndrews. Helping with the program are some of the former Human Rights commissioners and members of the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Summit.
The program now being planned will honor a local individual and an organization for continuing the equal rights and equal opportunity dream of Dr. King, said Supervisor O’Keeffe.
Each honoree nomination should include information supporting the candidacy. All proposals must be sent, no later than December 1, to Mamaroneck Town Center, Attention Town Supervisor, 740 W. Boston Post Rd, Mamaroneck, NY 10543. For further information, contact the supervisor at 381-7805.
In January, there will be an effort to reconstitute a local human rights group as a committee. Rather than hearing allegations of abuse, they will focus on human rights education.
