The Mamaroneck Mite Tigers, 2nd and 3rd graders from all four Mamaroneck elementary schools, won the Ramapo Saints Turkey Classic hockey tournament this weekend, November 27-29. The tournament is a 3-day competition for hockey teams in and around the Rockland County/Northern New Jersey area.
The Tigers were undefeated in three tournament games which assured them a place in Sunday’s championship game.
In the first game of the tournament, Mamaroneck defeated the Bergen Edge 3-2 in a very close, hard-fought game. On Saturday, The Tigers beat a tough Ramapo Saints team, in a very intense, well-played game, winning 5-3. The game could have gone to either team, but the Tigers were able to kill a crucial penalty, neutralizing the Saint’s power play in the final minutes of the game.
Sunday was a busy day for the Tigers as they had an early game against EFC that they won 7-2. This victory cemented them in first place going into the championship round in the afternoon. In this rematch against the hometown Saints, the Tigers showed their skills and teamwork early in the game by scoring 2 goals in the very first minute of play. When the final buzzer sounded, Mamaroneck had outscored the Saints 5-1.
Coach Jason Torre said, “The Mites have only been together a few months and have played just 11 games so far this season; but they are showing a level of maturity that I would expect to see after 30 or 35 games and a full season of practices. I was very proud of how they played the game and how well they represented Mamaroneck Youth Hockey.”
