Catherine van Eyck, a 15-year-old sophomore at Mamaroneck High School, has been selected to participate in the 2010 Miss New York Teen USA Pageant, which will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Albany, NY on November 27-29, 2009.
“I am so excited and honored to be representing our area,” said the Larchmont teen. “I’ve lived here my whole life and I can’t wait to meet girls from all over New York.”
Catherine is an honor student and is on the JV tennis and Varsity basketball teams. She is active in MHS Students for Senegal, an intern with the Larchmont Historical Society and a spokesperson for Queen for a Day, an international organization which provides play therapy programs for pediatric oncology patients in hospitals.
“As a volunteer for Queen for a Day, I give speeches to local organizations to raise awareness for this great cause and I host Princess Parties to raise the funds to purchase makeup, nail polish, feather boas, and tiaras. Queen for a Day gives these girls a break from their medical treatments and allows them to have some fun,” said Catherine.
To cover costs of participation in the USA Pageant, delegates are required to seek sponsorship from local businesses, organizations, and private individuals.
“So many wonderful people are making it possible for me to compete in the pageant,” said Catherine. “Without their support, I never would be able to reach my goal to be the best representative of Larchmont and Mamaroneck.”
“Sponsoring Catherine was an easy decision,” said Frank Carpenteri, Sr., owner of all eight Garden Catering locations including Port Chester and Mamaroneck. “Garden Catering has always given back to the community, especially [to] those individuals and organizations who seek to improve the lives of others around them. Catherine’s history of volunteer service and academic and athletic achievements makes her a great candidate for Miss New York Teen USA and we are proud to sponsor her pursuit of the crown.”
Christopher J. Gulotta, Eastchester resident and founder of The Gulotta Law Group and Paradigm Title Agency & Settlement chose to sponsor her because, “I have known Catherine for over 10 years and during that time, have watched her grow into an intelligent, thoughtful and gracious young lady. Her commitment to excellence is apparent by her academic and athletic accomplishments, but less apparent, yet equally true, is her care for others and her high degree of integrity. It is for these reasons (i.e., supporting what is good in the younger generation), that I was so enthusiastic about supporting Catherine’s dream of becoming Miss New York Teen USA!”
Each delegate to the pageant will be judged in swimsuit, evening gown, and personal interview. The winner will represent New York State at the Miss Teen USA Pageant in 2010. During her reign, Miss Teen USA becomes a representative of the Miss Universe Organization.
“My hope is that in my year of service as Miss New York Teen USA, I would travel across the great state of New York and get to know the young people. It would be a great opportunity to advocate for young women and to be a positive role model for other teens,” said Catherine.
