Library Children’s Room Reaches Fund Raising Goal

The thermometer on the lawn of the Larchmont Library now celebrates the good news:  the Children’s Room Renovation fundraising goal of $2.7 million has been reached, thanks to the generous bequest from George and Margaret Burchell and donations from 658 families.

Miriam Curnin, the chair of the Library Board of Trustees said,  “Thank you to the community which has so generously and wholeheartedly supported this project. The Library Board is pleased to be able to provide a new, up-to-date space in which children will enjoy learning and exploring for years to come.”

As with most major building projects, there have been some unforeseen issues requiring changes to the original design. For example, the planned semi-circular entry proved too costly – in terms of dollars and space.

According to the Library Board, they are using the necessary changes to create “an even better Children’s Room.”

The current plans provide for an additional 1,000 square feet in the Children’s Room. A change to a different type of heating and air-conditioning system will provide greater energy efficiency. A side result of this modification will be to permit the ceiling height in the Village Center to be increased.

Due to the required alterations, the expected opening date of the new Children’s Room has been moved back to the spring of 2010 from the fall of 2009. “The Library had hoped it would have been earlier, but the improvements will be well worth the wait,” said Library Director Diane Courtney.

At this point, demolition is almost complete and the new electrical service is almost finished.

Ms. Courtney noted, “The Larchmont Library is busier than ever. We are providing programs for children from 3 months on, and the community has been wonderfully understanding about children’s materials and programs in various areas of the main Library. Rebecca Eller, our children’s librarian, has done yeoman’s service in providing programs and events for many ages in limited space.” For information on programs and events, drop by the Library and pick up the calendar of events or log on to the Library web site at

Check Your Check: Those who donated to the Children’s Room Renovation Fund are asked to stop in the library to check that their names are properly listed on the donation list before it is finalized. There is still time to donate to the project, but the plaque will be finalized with donations received by September 1, 2009.
