Award Ceremony on April 21 Also Celebrates 2nd Anniversary
What did you do to celebrate your second anniversary? Go out to dinner? Have a glass of bubbly? Collect used furniture from your friends? Hmmm – probably not that last one, but that’s exactly what Furniture Sharehouse is doing to celebrate two years of providing free, gently-used furniture to over 475 needy Westchester families.
County-Wide Furniture Drive: April 25
On Saturday, April 25, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, the group is holding its first county-wide furniture drive. Donors can bring their gently-used furniture to one of three convenient drop-off locations: Playland, Rye; Westchester County Airport, White Plains; and North Castle Town Hall, Armonk. As an added bonus at the Armonk drop-off site, donors can also dispose of their “e-waste” (courtesy of Westchester County) and donate used bicycles and ski equipment (courtesy of Hickory & Tweed, Armonk).
At the Furniture Sharehouse, needy clients find what they need to furnish a home.
The number of clients who need furniture assistance has risen dramatically, while furniture donations have decreased, because people aren’t replacing furniture like they used to,” says Kate Bialo, director of the Sharehouse. “We hope to collect a lot of furniture with this drive, while creating new recycling collaborations with Westchester County and the Town of North Castle as a model for working with other communities on future drives.”
Before loading up your car, however, review the Donation Guidelines to see what items will or will not be accepted at the drop-off locations. Due to limited warehouse space, the Sharehouse cannot accept items that their clients cannot use. Tax receipts will be available for acceptable donations.
Second Anniversary Celebration: April 21
Furniture Sharehouse is also hosting a Second Anniversary Celebration at their warehouse at the Westchester County Airport on Tuesday, April 21 at 10:00 am to recognize their major supporters and volunteers. Appreciation awards will be presented to The Junior League of Westchester on the Sound; Westchester County; Westhab, Inc.; and Grace Church Community Center. “We would not be here to celebrate our second anniversary without the financial and operational support of these groups, and we want to acknowledge their contributions,” said Ms. Bialo.
Anniversary Cash Donations
Finally, of course, there is the need for monetary donations. It costs Furniture Sharehouse approximately $250 in expenses to furnish a family with 5-10 items of free furniture — an amazing figure, considering the value of the furniture that each family receives and the comfort and stability it provides to them at a critical stage in their lives. Just ask Tonya, who visited Furniture Sharehouse on a frigid morning in January.
Tonya had been living in a family homeless shelter with her three children for nine months and had finally moved into an apartment ten days before. While grateful for the permanent housing, she had no furniture and no money to buy it. At the warehouse, she was greeted by friendly volunteers who helped her select a sofa, armchair, coffee table and end table for her living room; a table and chairs for her kitchen; and a full-sized bed, two twin beds, two dressers, and two nightstands and a couple of lamps for her bedrooms. She added a small TV she saw in the back room, and on the way out, she stopped in the “Bonus” section to select several pieces of artwork and a wicker basket.
Tonya’s thank-you note says it all: “I am so thrilled with my furniture from Furniture Sharehouse. It really makes my family and I feel like we have a home again. I really had so much fun picking it out, and everyone was so patient and helpful. Thank you for brightening our lives once again!”
So what can you do to help Furniture Sharehouse celebrate its second anniversary? Three things:
1) Bring your gently-used furniture to one of our County-Wide Furniture Drive drop-off locations on Saturday, April 25.
2) Volunteer to become a “shopping assistant” at the warehouse or work a shift for the Furniture Drive.
3) Take the “Furnish a Family Challenge” by making an individual donation in any amount, or even better, talking a group of friends, neighbors, or fellow-congregants into raising $250 to “Furnish a Family.”
