Buchbinder Stepping Down; Pierson to Seek 2nd Term on School Board

Deadlines are fast approaching for anyone interested in serving on the Mamaroneck School Board to seek endorsements from the Committee for the Selection of School Board Nominees (Selection Committee). Applications are due March 1, 2010.

Two seats will be voted on by the community on May 18, those currently held by Janet Buchbinder and Nancy Pierson.

Ms. Buchbinder, who will be finishing her second three-year term, told the Gazette she would not seek a third. “If I weren’t so involved in RADAR [the organization working to prevent substance abuse among teens], I would consider it,” she said. “Both positions take a lot of work.”

Ms. Pierson has only served one term; she said she will seek another.

The Ideal Candidate

In a recent press release, the Selection Committee said it was looking to fill a vacant seat.

The Selection Committee is a group of 24 elected residents, 6 from each elementary school district. Their task is to recruit and endorse qualified candidates to run for the seven-member Mamaroneck School Board.

According to the committee, the ideal candidate would be “a district resident who cares deeply about our schools, can synthesize and analyze large quantities of information, is a team player, and an articulate communicator.” The candidate should also be available for board meetings on two Tuesday evenings per month and have 15-20 hours a week to devote to the board.

“This year, with budget cuts being handed down from Albany, strong candidates are needed more than ever,” said Theresa Finck, a Selection Committee member. “A person who is knowledgeable and passionate about our schools has a real chance here to get involved and make a difference,” said Sunny Park Suh, co-chair of The Selection Committee.

The Mamaroneck School Board makes policies that govern how the school district operates, and works closely with the superintendent of schools, who implements them. The board is responsible for developing district goals, adopting the annual budget, and deciding the timing and size of any bonds. The board determines any facility needs and approves the school calendar, among other duties.

Anyone interested in applying for endorsement by the Selection Committee is asked to contact Nancy Joselson at 777-3127. For more information, see or email

  • Selec. comitee, not Perfec comitee

Having served on the selection committee years ago, I now see how we were merely a vehicle to do the Superintendent’s and the Board’s bidding since they were vetted with regard to directions that the Board wanted to take. Community members with fresh ideas were discouraged from serving unless they supported the party line.

I think that the Selection Committee can actually discourage and intimidate smart, free thinkers from seeking office during a time when we need them the most. The current selection committee will probably only encourage candidates who support the Princeton Plan, their newest agenda to impose on the community.
