13-Year-Old Tigers are Champs in 2010 Westchester Tourney

The Larchmont-Mamaroneck Babe Ruth League’s Tiger team for 13-year-olds was crowned champion of the 2010 Westchester Baseball Classic Tournament in Scarsdale on Sunday, May 30th.

In pool play, the Tigers defeated Yonkers PAL (7-6), Rye Brook (12-0) and the Westchester Clippers (14-0) and tied Diamond Buddies (6-6), landing them in first place heading into the championship game. Their toughest competitor in the tournament, Diamond Buddies, was their opponent.

The championship game was a slugfest. Diamond Buddies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Tigers were on top 5-2 by the end of the first inning.

Diamond Buddies battled back, but the Tigers never relinquished the lead. The final score was 11-10, Tigers.

“We could not have won this tournament without a strong pitching staff, timely hitting, aggressive base running and solid fielding,” said one Tiger coach, Steve Muratore.

“I’m so proud of our pitchers, Jason Kriences, Ryan Schudy, Ryan Wolfson, Matt Garcia, Jakob Calvini, Sam Bauman and Tom Muratore, for taking the ball and pitching with composure,” said another Tiger coach, John Bositz.

Jakob Calvini had a great tournament, with 10 hits in 12 official at-bats, including 2 home runs. Corey Eisenband made some spectacular catches in the outfield thwarting potential threats from the opposition. Andrew Gross, Michael Chasin and Zach D’Alba also made significant contributions with their fielding, hitting and base running.

“We’re firing on all cylinders right now, playing great baseball,”added Coach Muratore. “This is just the beginning of a summer filled with league and tournament play.”

The Tigers will be playing in the WBA 13U division this summer and are participating in the 12th Annual Independence Day Shootout Tournament in Branford ,Connecticut and the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Showdown Tournament at Baseball Heaven, in Yaphank, New York.
