The spirit of Casablanca suffused the Orienta Beach Club on Saturday night, May 15th, as 300 Rick and Ilsa wannabees enjoyed the Mamaroneck Schools Foundation’s “Night in Casablanca” gala and helped raise over $90,000 for grants to benefit the district’s schools.
Opportunities to bid on some auction items continues online at www.mamaroneckschoolsfoundation.org.
The event’s co-chairs, Jennifer Malherbe, Laura Lavan and Rosie Murtagh said this year’s live and silent auctions were ‘”the most varied and exciting we’ve had in years.” The highest grossing item was a one-week stay at a luxury private villa in Sonoma wine country. “The bid for that one,” said Ms. Malherbe, “was $4,200.”
Another popular item – offered for the last time – was the naming of a Larchmont Tavern sandwich. Nancy and Michael Kanterman bid $2,000 and will have their sandwich appear on the LT menu.
Other auction highlights included tickets to the Z100’s Jingle Ball, TV’s Glee at Radio City and sporting events. One new offering was an opportunity to “Sing the National Anthem at an MHS Home Tigers Football Game.”
This was the Mamaroneck Schools Foundation’s fourteenth year, noted its current president, Melina Vourlekis. Since its inception, the organization has served as “a catalyst for the development and promotion of innovation and meaningful programs, she said. “We’ve awarded over $2.5 million to date, equaling about 275 grants throughout the district. Of these grants, the majority are still active today. In these challenging economic times, when fat and muscle are being trimmed from the district budget, it is doubly important for us to nurture innovation and creativity.”
