PGARTVENTURE GALLERY PRESENTS
“The Prints of Horst Janssen”
December 12, 2009 – January 16, 2010
Opening Reception: Saturday, December 12th from 5-8PM
PGartventure Gallery is pleased to present a holiday show featuring one of the most important and prolific graphic artists of his time, HORST JANSSEN (1929-1995). The exhibit will run from December 12, 2009 to January 16, 2010 at the PGartventure Gallery in Larchmont, NY. The public is invited to attend an opening reception on Saturday, December 12th, from 5-8 PM. The Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturdays from noon to 5 PM, Sundays from 10 AM – 4 PM, and by appointment.
“The Horst Janssen exhibition will present 28 etchings of this master printmaker from landscapes to self-portraits, most of them artist’s proofs acquired directly from the artist in the 1980’s,” commented PGartventure Gallery owner Pascale Goldenstein. “The visible world was always the point of departure for his work. This meant he was diametrically opposed to the spirit of the modernist schools in the second half of the twentieth century, where abstraction predominated. Although his work is largely figurative, he never imitated the truth. The reality in his landscapes is always distorted and dramatized. His self-portraits are extremely turbulent paranoid auto-depictions. He is a master of the numerous possibilities of expression offered to him by the technique of etching, playing with all of them.”
Horst Janssen was born on November 14, 1929 in Hamburg, Germany. He was a pupil of Paul Wunderlich, from whom he learned etching. His art was influenced earlier by Edvard Munch and later by ‘art brut’ and Jean Dubuffet. His life was marked by numerous marriages, outspoken opinions, alcoholism, and selfless dedication to the art of printmaking. Horst Janssen was awarded a number of prizes and awards for his printmaking, one of the more important being First Prize for Graphic Art at the Venice Biennale in 1968. His work is found in many public and private collections including the permanent collections of MOMA and the Tate, and has been exhibited at museums throughout the world, including the Rembrandt House in The Netherlands, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Busch-Reisinger Museum, Harvard University, the Albertina in Vienna, the Museum of Modern Art in Kamakura, Japan and the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway. In 2000, the Horst Janssen Museum in Oldenburg, Germany was opened, dedicated solely to his work. Also, his work is on permanent display in a dedicated room in The Hamburg Art Museum.
Also available as part of the PGartventure holiday show will be original works from Gallery artists, including Rolf Saint Agnes, D. Dominick Lombardi, Zvi Lachman, Lorena Guillen Vaschetti and others, offering affordable art — great gifts for art lover.
