Larchmont POW Dead in Korea
MacDonnell Succumbed To Malnutrition, Army Says

Army Master Sergeant Francis J MacDonnell, who made his home with his sister, Mrs. Marylorette Broderick of Albee Court, Larchmont, has been officially declared dead of malnutrition at Camp 5, Pyoktong. North Korea, according to a U. S. Army notice received by Mrs. Broderick.

Sgt. MacDonnell had been reported missing in action at Uijonbu, near Seoul, on January 1, 1951.

A veteran of World War II and a member of Larchmont Post 347, American Legion, Sgt. MacDonnell had served with the British Army in North Africa and Italy and had been cited for meritorious service when he saved several men from an explosion of gasoline-filled drums in Italy in 1944.

He reentered the Army after a short period in 1945 when he had been discharged and was sent to Japan in July, 1951, and from there to Korean action in August, l951. He was then attached to Company C, 19th Infantry, of the 24th Division.

Sgt. MacDonnell lost his life in the notorious Camp 5 after having survived a forced march from Uijonbu to Pyoktong in the Winter of 1951.
