A FLOCK OF TURKEYS BREAK LOOSE
FROM THE COLONIAL MARKET AND TEAR DOWN THE POST ROAD

by L. F. Van Zelm
Published in the Larchmonter-Times, 1922

By Ned Benton

During 1922, the Larchmonter-Times published a series of cartoons by L. F. Van Zelm. The cartoons featured local merchants, advertising their stores, and lampooning local residents. Larchmonters today may recognize the names of relatives. The eighth cartoon featured another Village emergency -- the flock of turkeys attempting to escape their invitations to Thanksgiving. The Colonial Market was the local grocery store.

The turkeys spook the horse for one of the Colonial Market carts, and it careens up an avenue. The cartoon shows a signature for "Hank" on the lower right hand corner. Apparently he was an assistant to Van Zelm.

A painter at Robinson's Hardware is knocked off his ladder.

Another horse-drawn delivery cart goes for a wild ride.

LPD Chief Hynds apprehends a suspected turkey thief.
