THE MOTORMEN PITCH HORSESHOES TO SEE WHO'LL MAKE THE NEXT RUN

By Ned Benton

During 1922, the Larchmonter-Times published a series of cartoons by L. F. Van Zelm. The cartoons featured local merchants, advertising their stores, and lampooning local residents. Larchmonters today may recognize the names of relatives. The third cartoon presented the motormen who operated the local trolley that went from the train station to the Manor. An additional article about the railroad in 1922 concerns a commuter revolt when the large trains were replaced.

The trolley appears at the right edge of Van Zelm's cartoon.

This is an undated picture of Larchmont's with the motormen. In the cartoon, the motermen are identified as Al Keith, Russell Engle and Dave Crimmins.

Van Zelm did not hesitate to poke fun at members of Larchmont's police department. Chief Bill Keresey is shown taking careful aim at Ollie Cochran's posterior.

The following article about Robinson's Hardware discussed the fire that took place on April 27th, and the store's clever advertising. John McLean Robinson was the President of Larchmont's Board of Trade.

The horsecart for Larchmont Builders frequently appeared in Van Zelm's cartoons about Larchmont. In this cartoon, the horse gets a snack from a distracted local shopper.

This section of the cartoon features an ad for the Hotel Bevan, one of Larchmonts hotels that catered to summer vacationers, seeking relief from the hot weather in New York City.
