Larchmont Hose Company Frolic Huge Success
The Larchmonter-Times, March 2, 1922
On Tuesday evening February 21st, members of Larchmont Hose Company No. 2 responded to two calls which kept the majority of the Hose Company up until 2 a.m. Wednesday and in which the usual happy duty of rolling up and packing away the hose was conspicuous by its absence.
Nearly sixty active and associate members and guests responded to the calls, which were, in reality uniquely worded invitations to an entertainment and beef steak supper.
As early as 7:30 p. m. Tuesday, cars began to line up on Larchmont Avenue near the Post Road for transportation to the evenings of the evening's guest to Proctor's in Mount Vernon where, through the courtesy of Mr. Murdoch, an unusually good bill, including Harry Jolson, brother to Al Jolson who greeted the Hose Company during the first act, was enjoyed
Entertainers provided music. Many of the old songs were sung, including a parody on "In the Good Old Summer Time," which was very popular and is reprinted herewith.
Short speeches and more music finished the evening, with a vote of thanks from the entire assemblage to the entertainment committee, a rousing cheer for Mr. Murdoch, whose generosity may be entertainment possible. The following parody song to the tune of "In the Good Old Summer Time" made a hit with the boys. One all the members of the entertainment committee is said to be the author, but his identity was not divulged. This is the song:
In the good old Summer time,
In the good old Summer time,
Chief Towle decides we'll have a drill,
At station forty-nine.
We don old clothes and play the hose,
And that part's all mighty fine,
But hose must be rolled up again
In the good old Summer time.
In the good old Summer time,
In the good old Summer time,
Chief Dalley gives us all a list,
And stands us up in line,
And makes us tell what's on the cart,
From eight o'clock ‘til nine,
We only show how little we know,
In the good old Summer time.
In the good old Summer time,
In the good old Summer time,
Bill Gray sends out a notice which says
"There'll be ‘no drill' this time."
We all attend,
And bring a friend,
To try to get him to "join."
Boschen suggests a ladder drill,
In the good old summer time.
In the good old Summer time,
In the good old Summer time,
You're tired that day and "hit the hay"
A little after nine.
At half past two the siren blew,
And out of bed you climb.
A false alarm in Pryor Lane
In the good old Summer time.
In the good in the good old Winter time,
In the good old Winter time,
Friend Murdoch gives us all a treat,
To keep us all in line.
With Vaudeville seats
And "beefsteak eats,"
We think it's all mighty fine.
May all towns have a man like him,
In the good old Winter time.
