Larch Womans Club hosts choir
Time: 1:30 pm
The Dobbs 16, a select coed a cappella choir from The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, will perform under the auspices of the Larchmont Woman’s Club on February 19. They will share the program with Ben Lusher, a jazz pianist and a Masters 12th grade student, who has been featured in the Monterey Jazz Festival, the LA Grammy Awards Show choir and YoungArts Week 2010. At the National Championship of High School A Cappella, Dobbs 16 won the New York regional title in 2005-2006. Advancing to the finals, they placed in the top five in the country. Members of the group represented the U.S. at the Morioka Chuo International Forum in Japan, and the entire group went on tour in China in 2008. In November 2009, Dobbs 16 appeared on the Tyra Banks TV Show. Choral Director Gillian Crane explains that the mission of the group is to bring hope and peace through music by performing throughout the community and abroad. Dobbs 16 also hosts the Annual Gilda\'s Club A Cappella Extravaganza, inviting performances by many Westchester schools to raise money for breast cancer research. Students in grades 9 to 12 audition for their positions in the select chorus, which combines soprano, alto, tenor, and bass voices. Each year the singers attend a private workshop at Columbia University with the popular Columbia Clefhangers, who share their arrangements with the teens. Their repertoire on February 19 will be largely collegiate. Linda Lamb, chairperson of the event for the Woman’s Club, says that Dobbs 16’s two albums \"Lost in Shanghai\" and \"Late for Practice\" will be for sale. The public is invited without charge to the performance, which follows the Club’s meeting at the Larchmont Avenue Church, 60 Forest Park Avenue, at 1:30 p.m. More information from 834-1609.

The Episcopal Church Women (ECW) of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Larchmont is hosting a screening of an exciting 90 minute film that is short-listed for the Oscars:

PRAY THE DEVIL BACK TO HELL

Pray the Devil Back to Hell tells the true story of how ordinary women in Liberia risked their lives to force the warlords to the bargaining table and bring peace to their country. It is as inspiring and uplifting as a film can be!

This event is co-sponsored by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) – Metropolitan NY Chapter, and features an introduction and following discussion lead by Dr. Jacqueline Honor Plumez.

All women from the community are welcome and refreshments will be provided.

Date: Thursday, February 25, 2010
Time: 7:00pm
Place: St. John’s Episcopal Church, Four Fountain Square, Larchmont, NY 10538 Undercroft
RSVP: St. John’s Church 914-834-2981

Background of the film:
In a chance trip to Africa, Abigail Disney found herself hearing about the role of the Liberian women in bringing peace to the country. As she researched the story further, she met the women and felt compelled to tell their story.

Pray the Devil Back to Hell chronicles the remarkable story of the courageous Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country.

Thousands of women — ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim — came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they demanded a resolution to the country’s civil war. Their actions were a critical element in bringing about an agreement during the stalled peace talks.

A story of sacrifice, unity and transcendence, Pray the Devil Back to Hell honors the strength and perseverance of the women of Liberia. Inspiring, uplifting, and most of all motivating, it is a compelling testimony of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations.

* Peter Kaplan on Journalism
Peter Kaplan on Journalism
Time: 4:30 pm
On Sunday, February 28th, at 4:30pm, the Friends of the Larchmont Public Library will present Larchmont\'s own Peter Kaplan, former editor of The New York Observer and currently creative director of Conde Nast Traveler magazine, as he discusses the fate of print journalism.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 40,000 newspaper jobs were lost in 2009, nearly twice the 21,000 cut in 2008. Clearly, the economic model seems doomed in the face of so much free content available over the internet.

This event will take place at Larchmont Temple, 75 Larchmont Avenue (enter on Willow Avenue) in Larchmont and is free and open to the public. Refreshments begin at 4:00pm.

The Friends of the Larchmont Public Library is a not-for-profit organization independent of the Larchmont Library that provides cultural programs to the community and addresses many of the needs of the Library not included in the Library\'s own budget. More information about membership is available at www.larchmontlibrary.org/friends.html
