* Pray The Devil Back To Hell
Pray The Devil Back To Hell
Time: 7:00 pm
Click for the website: www.praythedevilbacktohell.com

Due to weather, this event was rescheduled to Thursday March 4.

The Episcopal Church Women (ECW) of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Larchmont is hosting a screening of an exciting 90 minute film that is short-listed for the Oscars:

PRAY THE DEVIL BACK TO HELL

Pray the Devil Back to Hell tells the true story of how ordinary women in Liberia risked their lives to force the warlords to the bargaining table and bring peace to their country. It is as inspiring and uplifting as a film can be!

This event is co-sponsored by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) – Metropolitan NY Chapter, and features an introduction and following discussion lead by Dr. Jacqueline Honor Plumez.

All women from the community are welcome and refreshments will be provided.

Date: Thursday, February 25, 2010
Time: 7:00pm
Place: St. John’s Episcopal Church, Four Fountain Square, Larchmont, NY 10538 Undercroft
RSVP: St. John’s Church 914-834-2981

Background of the film:
In a chance trip to Africa, Abigail Disney found herself hearing about the role of the Liberian women in bringing peace to the country. As she researched the story further, she met the women and felt compelled to tell their story.

Pray the Devil Back to Hell chronicles the remarkable story of the courageous Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country.

Thousands of women — ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim — came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they demanded a resolution to the country’s civil war. Their actions were a critical element in bringing about an agreement during the stalled peace talks.

A story of sacrifice, unity and transcendence, Pray the Devil Back to Hell honors the strength and perseverance of the women of Liberia. Inspiring, uplifting, and most of all motivating, it is a compelling testimony of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations.

Guest Speaker: Julio Medina
Executive Director, Exodus Transitional Community

Hard Road Home

Exodus Transitional Community is helping released prisoners with their many obstacles of reentry, including finding jobs and reconnecting with their families.

Once released from prison, Julio experienced these challenges first hand. As he was struggling with finding a job the plan for Exodus was truly born. Julio wanted to establish a support system serving women and men focusing on Education, Family, Employment, Community Involvement and Health. Over the last decade the Exodus faith based program has helped some 5000 people transition back into society.

During his time at Sing Sing, Julio completed the New York Theological Seminary Master’s Degree Program. He was Laura Bush’s guest for the 2004 State of the Union Address when the President announced the Prisoner Reentry Initiative. Exodus has also become a signature program for the White House Ready 4 Work reentry initiative. In 2008 Exodus was featured in the PBS documentary HARD ROAD HOME, which received an Emmy Nomination.

Tickets can be purchased during coffee hour or for reservations please call the Church Office reservation line at 914-834-1800 x 341.

Larch Womans Club meeting
Time: 1:00 pm
Respected Stained Glass Craftsman at Larchmont Woman’s Club

Master craftsman Peter Rohlf will explain the process of preserving a building’s artistic heritage at a meeting of the Larchmont Woman’s Club on Friday, March 19, at 1:00 p.m.

His studio, Rohlf’s Stained Glass & Leaded Glass, founded 90 years ago in Mt. Vernon by his father Hans, is one of the largest firms of its kind and is renowned in the field. His studio is called upon to restore and create works for cathedrals, houses of worship and institutions around the world, including St. John the Divine and St. Parick’s. The company’s expertise can be seen close by at the Larchmont Avenue Church, where all the windows in the 85-year-old structure were restored and two new ones created, designed by artist Rabby Ragnarsson, a parishoner.

Mr. Rohlf will describe the collaboration that ensues between client/committee, architect/artist and craftsman. Among his many honors is a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Stained Glass Association in 2003 in recognition of his more than five decades of distinguished work.

The public is invited to the meeting at the Larchmont Avenue Church, 60 Forest Park Ave. at no charge. More information from 914-834-1689.

Kids For World Health
Time: 11:20 am
Please join us at 11:20 AM after the Larchmont Ave. Church service on March 21, 2010, for a presentation by the original founders of Kids for World Health and their founding teacher and adviser, Kay Kobbe. The program will include a recently documented film, “Kids for World Health: Its History and Its Passion” produced by Brad Garfield and written by Kay Kobbe, as well as a presentation by Kay and the founders about an important outcome of the organization, “A Journey to the Human Spirit”, describing a personal search for understanding of those whom KFWH services in the village of Lwala, Uganda.

Kids for World Health is a grass-roots organization founded by students in a third grade classroom at Chatsworth Avenue School in Larchmont, New York in 2001. It was begun as a compassionate response to the thousands of people who die each year from diseases for which there are known cures in the western world, but for many of the world’s poorer countries, are unattainable.

Meeting once a week at LAC, the founders make up a Student Policy Board that makes decisions on Actions and placement of KFWH funds and policy based on information received from a distinguished team of doctors from the World Health Organization. The founders of Kids for World Health were recipients of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award in January 2010, sponsored by the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Human Rights Committee.

Kay Kobbe is a former teacher at Chatsworth Avenue School, a free-lance writer, and an educational consultant. She has worked professionally on the development of the Teacher Institute of Mamaroneck and acted as Coordinator of the Lincoln Center Institute of the Performing Arts for 25 years. She continues her work at Lincoln Center as a member of the Imagination Board. She also served as Director of Education and Deacon of Scarsdale Congregational Church. Kay is President of Kids for World Health, and finds importance in the educational expression of student voice. Her experience with KFWH has aimed to integrate the importance of acting on universal truths and convictions to make a difference and the importance of understanding common themes and human connectiveness among the world’s people.
