Latimer Invites Public to "Make Your Own Law"
from NY Assemblyman George Latimer
Have an idea for a new law? If you’re a constituent of NY Assemblyman George Latimer you now have a way to share your idea in Albany. Assemblyman Latimer is sponsoring a "Make Your Own Law" program, inviting residents of his district (which includes Larchmont and Mamaroneck) to submit a proposal for State legislation.
"I'm happy to take the best ideas from the community and put them before the State Assembly for consideration," said Mr. Latimer.
Residents can use the online form (see below) to share their concepts for State legislation. A draft would include:
- Basic concept or purpose of the law
- Specific benefits of the proposal
- Expected costs of the proposal
Mr. Latimer's Assembly District Team will review each proposal to assess if it has a potential legislative basis in New York State law and is legally permissible. They will also check if the proposed law would require an in-depth fiscal note to closely estimate costs or a home rule message from a local government. By February 1, Mr. Latimer will select up to three proposals for submission to the appropriate Assembly committee, which is the first step in the legislative process.
"Many people have good ideas", Mr. Latimer said, "but this takes the process to the next step. It may be a good project for high school and college students...or for senior citizens...people active in a local neighborhood association, or in a garden club...or for any interested individual. The author will have to do a little work to submit the proposal in a formal way - not just in a one-line comment or general idea. But it's one more way to open the doors of government.”
In February, the Assemblyman will announce the bills to be submitted from the citizen proposals.
