LATIMER SAYS "NO"
TO COMMUTER TAX
(September 29, 2008) Assemblyman George Latimer (D-Westchester,
91st A.D.) issued the following statement expressing his opposition
to the reinstitution of a Commuter Tax on those who work in New
York City but live in Westchester and other suburban communities:
"The economic crisis we face today is not merely faced by
New York City but by all of us who live in the metropolitan region.
All of our local governments face revenue shortages...and all of
our people, whether they live in the Morrisania section of the Bronx,
or in the Town of Mamaroneck, face tough times ahead. It would be
wrong to place the additional burden of a commuter tax on the shoulders
of people already struggling with high property taxes, with the
future of the financial services industry as yet unresolved.
"I will work against, and vote NO on any proposed commuter
tax. It is a matter of intrinsic fairness that we should not be
asked to pay a disproportionate share of the costs of the MTA."
