BARBARA KORN
Barbara Korn died November 1, 2008, at the age of 82, of complications due to lymphoma, at Maine Medical Center, Portland, Maine.
She was born Barbara Jean Grant on September 16, 1926, in Chicago, daughter of Margaret Dorothy Smith and Donald Edwin Grant. At eighteen months she was adopted by her maternal grandparents, Gertrude and Ralph Henderson of Sioux City, Iowa.
Upon graduation from high school, she briefly attended Morningside College in Sioux City. Her degree in Journalism was awarded from Iowa University.
At the time of her marriage to Gerald E. (Jerry) Korn, in 1948, she was employed in the advertising department of Julius Garfinckel's, Inc. in Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Korn received her Masters of Library Science degree from Columbia University in 1966. She worked as a librarian at Mamaroneck High School, Mamaroneck, New York, and at Horton Elementary School in Port Chester, New York.
She was also employed as a library clerk at the Larchmont Public Library, as a coordinating librarian at St. Augustine’s School, Larchmont, and by the Future Farmers of America headquarters in Woodstock, Virginia.
Her volunteer work has included Head Start and the Wright to Read program in Alexandria, Virginia; the North Parsonsfield Library; the Line School; the Limerick Public Library; and the Born to Read program in York County. She served on the boards of the Alexandria Community Y, the Oldtimers Shop, and the committee to restore the old townhouse in Parsonsfield, Maine.
Mrs. Korn is survived by her husband; three daughters: Ellen Korn of Los Angeles, California; Margaret Bott, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Susan Korn, of Parsonsfield, Maine; and three grandchildren: Theo Bott of Albuquerque; Sarah Kiely, of Portland, Maine; and Medeina Ryan, of Orange, Massachusetts.
There will be no funeral. Burial will be at a later date in Maplewood Cemetery, Parsonsfield. For expressions of sympathy, please make donations to the Limerick Public Library.
