JAY IRWIN NOREK

Jay Irwin Norek, 86, of Mamaroneck, NY, passed away on May 18, 2008. He is survived by his wife Ruth, his soul mate since childhood; children Alfred and wife Meryl of Slingerlands, New York, Susan and husband Nestor Guzman of Scottsdale, AZ, and Betty and husband Dr. Alan Feldman of Fairfield, CT. He was the beloved "Papa" to grandchildren Josh Norek, Jennifer Cafarella, Emily and Max Feldman and great-grandchildren Emma and Zoe Cafarella, who were the recipients of countless corny jokes and loving attention.

Jay was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and a decorated Lieutenant in the U.S Navy, having served on the destroyer USS Betelgeuse in both the Pacific and Atlantic theatres during WWII. Jay was a pioneer in the recreation industry, operating indoor tennis facilities and health clubs, and a founder of the New England Tennis camps.

An avid vocalist, Jay sang in several choirs and was most proud of his long affiliation with the Westchester Golden Chordsmen. He was a strong supporter of Jewish charitable causes including the Jewish Community Center of Mid-Westchester, Israel Bonds and the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 11:30 am, at Westchester Reform Temple, 255 Mamaroneck Road, Scarsdale, NY. Contributions in memory of Mr. Norek may be made to The Norek Camp Fund at the JCC of Mid-Westchester, 999 Wilmot Road, Scarsdale, NY 10583.
