Ellen Williams is among those helping MHS send multiple teams to sectional play this fall.

(October 23, 2008) Female athletes at Mamaroneck High School are having an exceptional fall season, with strong finishes recorded for the swim, tennis, field hockey and soccer teams. For most of the girls, summer vacations ended early and pre-season practice began in August. The hard work seems to be paying off as players break local records and the teams qualify for upcoming post-season sectional games that give them a chance at regional and state level championships.

Here are some teams and athletes to keep an eye on:

Field Hockey Undefeated

The Mamaroneck Tiger Field Hockey team ends the season undefeated having not given up a single goal. “We scored 103 goals, which is a new record for goals scored during the regular season for MHS,” said Coach John Savage. This even surpasses the goal record for the 2004 team that won the NY State championship.

Cathleen Smith leads the section in goals with 25 for the season. Charlotte Gardiner is tied for second with 19 and Ellen Williams has 17.

With their 18-0 record, the Tigers are the number 1 seed in the Section 1 Class A tournament. They play their first sectional game on Saturday, October 25 at 2pm in Flint Park.

Tennis on Top

“This is the best team I have had in 10 years of coaching at MHS,” said Tim Hooker, varsity girls tennis coach. Five out of seven players from the league tournament have qualified for sectionals including:

-Senior Kelsey Grad (at right), who placed first in the league and is seeded as the number 1 singles player for sectionals.

-Kelly Cadden and partner Sarah Sudin and Sarah Comerford and partner Shelby Silverman who qualified in the doubles competitionl.

Sectionals begin Thursday, October 23 in Ardsley and continue on Friday.

Soccer Is Number One

The girls soccer team has an impressive 11-4-2 record, tops in the league. This Monday, they clinched the league championship by beating Scarsdale 3-0.

Senior Stephanie Velez has excelled all season and scored all three goals in the last game.

Coach Ron Blain singled out the three captains for additional praise. “Phoebe [Hanley] has played spectacular in goal and demonstrated great leadership,” he said. “Amanda Tuck has been outstanding playing all over the field and Alana Flynn has done a stellar job playing the sweeper position.”

Swimming to Sectionals

Coach Cathleen Ferguson reported that sophomore Kelly Johanson remains undefeated this season in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Megan McGuire and Annaelle Steman both qualified for the 100 yard freestyle and will swim along side Kelly at sectionals, which take place November 10-13 at Clarkstown Middle School.
