Fifty Runners Complete 13.1 Miles of Paine to Pain Classicfrom the Sound Shore Runners and Mulisport Club
(October 2, 2008) As municipal officials gathered at the Thomas Paine Cottage in New Rochelle to celebrate the grand opening of the new Colonial Greenway Trail that loops through seven municipalities, the Sound Shore Runners and Multisport Club conducted an inauguration of its own - the first annual Paine to Pain Classic run on Sunday, September 29.
Runners raced 13.1 miles over hills, around hairpin turns, over rocks and roots, and through mud and streams. The race began at 9 am at the Thomas Paine Cottage and ended hours later at New Rochelle High School - with all 50 entrants completing the course. Among them was 77-year-old Michael Bennett, who completed the course in 3 hours and 35 minutes, said Eric Turkewitz, the race director. "The runners had a blast," said Mr. Turkewitz. "The people who ran this race are hard core for the most part - one guy had run a marathon the day before. This is a hard course - not one for the casual, 'out-for-a-jaunt' kind of runner." The rigors of the run did not appear to dampen Mr. Turkewitz' enthusiasm - he was already discussing plans for next year's event. "We were delighted with the way it came out," he said. Race sponsors included the Turkewitz Law Firm (NYC), Westchester Road Runner (White Plains), Cafe Mozart (Mamaroneck), the Moneypaper (Rye) and Jan Mar Trophies (New Rochelle). The Sound Shore Runners & Multisport Club, the only running and triathlon club along Westchester's Long Island Sound, has members of all ages who run, cycle, swim and even kayak.
