MHS Class of 2008: Where Are They Going?

(September 16, 2008) “A tremendous year,” is how Nick Kourabas,
Mamaroneck High School's guidance counseling coordinator, described the
class of 2008. Students were accepted at 310 colleges. He cited “multiple
acceptances” at many of the nation’s top-rated colleges, such
as University of Michigan and Cornell. See below for
a complete list of colleges where students were accepted and where they
will attend.
Of the 323 graduating students, 80% are attending 4-year colleges and
13% are at 2-year institutions, with 7% choosing to work, travel, or defer
college attendance for a year. This is slightly more non-college bound
students than in recent years and may reflect the “tiny increase
in kids wanting to take a gap year,” Mr. Kourabas surmised. “But
kids are slow to warm to it,” in our community, he said “There’s
so much pressure for kids to go to college.” (See:Where

The continuing big story, however, is the number of students applying
for early admission. “That was monstrous last year,” Mr. Kourabas
exclaimed. “We flirted with 50%.” Apparently the decision
of Harvard, Princeton and a very small number of other schools to do away
with early decisions has not made a dent in the early application frenzy.
The anticipated 370 graduates of the class of 2009 will have an even
more difficult time, according to Mr. Kourabas, citing “predictions
that this year is going to be the toughest ever.” The “echo
boom,” reflecting the children of post-World War II baby boom parents,
is responsible for the growing number of students nationwide who are applying
to colleges and creating an increasingly competitive landscape.
When will it end? “In two to three years, we will start to see
smaller classes and it will become more of a buyer’s market,”
Mr. Kourabas predicted.
Applications & Data Submission Go Electronic
While students have been filing their college applications online for
years, the guidance department will be joining them this year, sending
all college documents electronically, from transcripts to recommendations.
“Every indication we’re getting from the colleges is that
they want us to do it,” Mr. Kourabas said. He noted that filing
deadlines would now be much easier to meet, facilitating the 8 –
10 applications each student applying to college is likely to make.
